The horrified look on my aunt's face haunts me even now. She pointed at the pile of cellophane wrappers in her trash can. It was all that remained from her stock of single serving Bama Pecan Pies.
She was shocked, and so was I.
I couldn't yet understand why she was shrieking at me this way. Besides, it was only 5 pies, not 7.
There I was. A binge eater at the age of 12. It was the day I learned some folks hate fat people. Someone I loved now thought of me as disgusting. I did not like this new feeling.
I already knew I was fat. This lesson came at a Sears department store shopping for school clothes. My brothers wore regular, but I needed the "husky" size Toughskin pants. Their mocking was the beginning of a life of pain from being fat.
Secret Life of Fat
For me, overeating was a comfort, like a pacifier to a crying baby.
As I got older, I kept binge eating. And I hid it. I chose the cheapest calories I could find, so my wife wouldn't notice.
I spent way too much time searching for cheap junk in the convenience store. I'd stand there so long, the clerks thought I was shoplifting! Even this embarrassment did not stop me from binge eating though.
I was 70 lbs overweight. I was afraid to go to sleep. My snoring became so bad, I would wake up in a terror from stopping breathing.
I tried all the diets. Weight watchers, Atkins, slow carb, you name it. They all worked - to a point. Then the weight would come right back.
